Blessing of the Fleet Enjoyed by Local Boaters
Tuesday, July 02, 2013
As expected the 20th Anniversary of the Blessing of the Fleet was a most satisfying event which included the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the United States Power Squadron as well as the 75th Anniversary of the Pittsburgh Power Squadron.
The clergy for this year's Blessing Ceremony included a Catholic Bishop, a Jewish Rabbi, an orthodox pastor, two Protestant Pastors and a Chaplain from the Shriner's Mariners.
U. S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Pittsburgh, Commander Lindsay Weaver was a principal speaker and Captain George Boyle, Master of Ceremonies, presented the proclamation from Mayor Ravenstal of Pittsburgh proclaiming June 23 to July 4 as Safe Boating Week for the City of Pittsburgh.
The conclusion of the Blessing Ceremony was the traditional throwing of the floral wreath into the waters which represented a prayer for all those who lost their life in our waters in the past as well as a petition that no one would lose their life in our waters during the 2013 boating season.
