    Default Locking through at McAlpine

Can someone explain the locking process? We are wanting to go down to New Albany tonight but I've never been through the locks and can't get the lockmaster to pick up the phone.

I would say it's the wrong time for your first locking being the 4th! Suggest google and look for locking videos to watch.

In my experience the crew at McAlpine are extremely professional, courteous, and helpful to pleasure boaters. I haven't locked through in a couple years but if my memory serves me, you can contact them via VHF Channel 13 prior to entering the Portland canal. Identify your boat and let them know you are a pleasure craft. They will give you directions to move through expeditiously. It is a fun "adventure".

You will need some lines to tie up while in the lock.

    Good luck.

A little late now, but I'd think the river was close last night for fireworks.

    No locking allowed maybe?

I'm a little late to this thread. You'll be glad to know that the tips on locking through on the PortKY.com site are still very relevant:
