Default Where the heck is the alternator on my Merc 470 170 hp

Am I that blind or is there actually an alternator on my Mercruiser 470 170 hp motor? I keep reading about "conversion" kits but can't seem to find a picture or an alternator to replace!!! Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Its underneath the crank pulley, like inside the engine. When the regulator goes bad buy the bracket and rewire for a standard marine alternator.

Are you sure it's faulty? What's the problem? I also added a picture.

I'm assuming the worse. 4 years as Navy electrician, 2 year Associate in EE from PSU, listed on 2 patents for electrostatic spray and I hooked the friggin battery up backwards!!! Nothing smoked, nothing sparked. Didn't try to start it either. However, once I realized the mistake (battery compartment so small) and corrected it, the blower and bilge pump don't work. Lights seem to be OK and windshield wiper works. It's a 1985 mercruiser 470 so I'm expecting the worst news.
