Default Buy a chartplotter or use the new marine Navigation Apps instead?

Navionics, Pro Charts, Skipper, etc are apps that can be downloaded onto the phone instead of buying a chartplotter. Buying the local lakes and rivers info are about $50 extra for the downloads but the apps themselves are free. Do any of you use them? Which is best?

Personally... I would rather keep my phone safe, and buy an inexpensive chartplotter that can take the sun and water. Besides... if your phone rings... then you loose your chartplotter.

    Just my 2 cents.

The Navionics App worked well for me last year. If I go with a chartplotter, I'd like to go all the way and add the fish finder. Until then, anyone try any of the apps other than Navionics?
