I am replacing my starter on my Merc 260 - which is the better starter for performance and reliability? API, Arco ? any suggestions would be helpful...thanks in advance

Just make sure its marine rated. Do not use an automobile starter, as it sparks, and can cause an explosion.

why don't you just get yours rebuilt,
joe at boulivard generator in belleview did mine while i waited, and was reasonable, have no issues.

that is what I was going to do, but when I got the starter out I noticed it must of been done before.(just bought the boat last year - bad previous owners)...it had what looked like some clear sealant seeping out of the seams, all dry and hardened up - it looks like they glued it back together - so I thought it's best to just buy a new one

ya never know till you try,
he's got lots of parts there, if your nervous price a new one and go to a rebuilding shop and see what they say. usually there is no cost for a look n see.Mark
